Crafts’ room

A double room with separate beds which can, similar to the Music Room, accommodate three people since the bed on the right can become a double bed as well. In this case, the third person in the room gets a slightly reduced price so that three people staying in it will get BB (bed and breakfast) for 660 kn or 220 kn per person. Crafts’ Room emphasizes the centuries of Zagreb’s long crafts history, from the 13th century onwards. According to the list of craftsmen done in 1769, in Laška Ves – today’s Vlaška Street, where Studio Kairos is located, there were 136 craftsmen of various trades: tailors, shoe makers, saddlers, locksmiths, blacksmiths, carpenters etc. They gathered in associations of particular trade – guilds, governed by guild leaders. Although modern ways of production have almost completely destroyed craftsmanship, few shoemakers, tailors and goldsmiths can still be found in the old town center. Just next to Studio Kairos there is a small hand made jewelery shop called Nautilus, where unique jewelry made of natural material has been produced for over 30 years. And it can make a lovely present or a souvenir of Zagreb and it’s residents’ diligent hands.

Crafts’ route takes you through the history of crafts in Zagreb, since 13th century Zagreb people have been good craftsmen. According to craftsmanship list from 1769 in Laška Ves (today’s Vlaška street in which Studio Kairos is located) , there were 136 craftsmen. From tailors, shoemakers, leather craftsmen, blacksmiths, carpenters… Today there are fewer of them, but one interesting craft is located right next to b&b. Nautilus is a little shop that makes jewelry for last 30 years, and it is made from natural ingredients, like sea shells, and you will definitely find a nice souvenir of Zagreb in it.

If you continue through Vlaška Street towards west you will find few of shoemakers, leather makers or hairdressers. When you arrive to the beginning of Old Vlaška street, just near the Cathedral in Bakačeva street number 8 you will find place called Širok, an for decades they have been making candles and products made from bees wax, and also lovely souvenirs. Nearby, in part called Pod zidom (Under the wall) there is also on of famous Zagreb trades – Cahun, whose hats have been clothing Zagreb residents and tourists since 1935.
If you’d like an original Zagreb souvenir that you will always be able to carry with you there is a golden Licitar heart pendant (Licitar is traditional part of Zagreb national costumes). This heart is made by goldsmith Mario Nokaj in Radićeva Street near main city square. If you love flowers, be sure to stop at Petar Preradović square, or among Zagreb residents called also Flower square, where in flower shops you can buy all sorts of flowers, bouquets, plants in buckets, and have coffee in bars nearby, or just enjoy walk through colorful Zagreb old town.
